I like both. Most of the UK movies I've seen in this genre have had some very humourous scenes and dialogue (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Low Life's and High Heels, Snatch). Long Good Friday was interesting for it's possible glimpse into the structure/make-up of UK "underworld". US movies seem a bit more somber than the UK movies I've seen in the genre (except the comedies such as Mafia!, Midnight Run, etc..).
I would like to see more Elmore Leonard novels (besides the Get Shorty line) put on film. There are some very funny situations/ characters in his books.

For English gangster movies, you cant beat The Long Good Friday, Bob Hoskins, and Helen Mirren made that movie.
However the Americans had it down cold movies like the God Father, and Scarface .
I don't think they can be compared that way, because they are portraying two very different cultures, and eras and styles of running the so- called crime families.
The "Firm" in England, The "Mafia/Cosenostra" i( forgive spelling)n America, and of course the Cuban Gangsters.
Each style definitely has it's merits.

Apples or pears? I'll vote for Mango. I like Japanese film about crime. I'm very fond of Nippon blind swordsman series that provides interesting visual exploration into countryside threatened by criminal elements. Personal honor is important
to me and I appreciate watching same in fiction.
