there are legitimate times to report abuse. I rarely report anyone, and when I do it's not because I disagree with them (I like disagreement) but for something that's really out of line.

I give thumbs-down more often, but again, not to those I merely disagree with (I'll thumbs-up a well written, well argued post I disagree with). I thumbs-down nasty and rude comments, or those that ooze of thoughtlessness and stupidity.

There amy be those who do react out of lonliness or jealousy, but those are hardly the entire scope of motivations at work here. I tend to view my own contributions here as a positive, and behave in hopes of encouraging others to be positive as well.

:)

It depends on the motive of the Answerer, but I assume you mean the normal Answerer and not someone who is just malicious.
To me, the thumbs are used to indicate approval or disapproval of an answer, especially if it doesn't answer the question. It isn't meant to be taken personally, although if it doesn't answer the question then maybe it should. Using a thumbs down doesn't mean the answer is offensive or of that nature. Anyway, I'm sure a lot of people don't go back and check to see if they got a thumbs up or down, so the thumbs are really an indication to the other people reading the answers what you think.
In regards to reporting people, I believe there are a small number of people who do this for no reason at all, but I think most people report for a very good reason.

I have never reported anyone but I do give a thumbs down when I think it is appropriate and I'm not lonely or jealous.I think some people do just because someone thinks differently than they do.

People are carrying a lot of anger inside themselves today, and that is just one more way to spill some of it onto someone else.

Don't let it bother you. It isn't important and the negativity and criticism of strangers isn't worth wasting your time thinking about.
