Nothing has ever been proven. Likeliness is either magnetic or electromagnetic charges which have disrupted vessels of all kinds for centuries. Speculations have included, everything from Alien interference, Giant sea creatures, parallel universes, even the lost City of Atlantis has been rumored to have existed there. So imagine away.

Hurricane tracks + gulf stream flow provides some scientific explanation, but I think it's mostly myth, no?
