The traditional answer is the guy who took the initial fall: James Earl Ray. He confessed at first, then recanted for the rest of his life in jail. It seems the King's believed him. They tried several times to get the case reopened but the vaious administrations said there wasn't enough new evidence to reopen the case. So the answer is either James Earl Ray or we don't know. Take your pick.

James Earl Ray. He was an escaped convict who thought he'd be considered a hero for killing King. That name is why former President James Earl Carter still goes by the name of Jimmy Carter.

Not James Earl Ray as the bullet stayed in the skull of king. Note that James gun a 30/06, a bullet from this gun would have left no trace of a skull.
