Only if they won't leave me alone and insist that I buy something or leave the store at once, with a nasty sneer.

Yes and no. It's their job so I can't actually get angry at them but I like to look around and be left alone when I'm shopping. It bothers me if I think someone is watching and waiting for me to buy something and it makes me feel like leaving the store. If I need help, I ask.
I worked in a record store for years and I was supposed to ask people if they needed help but whenever I did they always said 'no' anyway. A lot of people would walk out as soon as we asked them if they were looking for anything. It made them feel uninvited. I find that it's better to make eye contact with them when they come in and smile to show that you are available if they need you but you aren't trying to bother them. I liked to give customers some space. They always seemed to buy more when I wasn't breathing down their neck.

Very much so, unfortunately they are made to do this which is annoying to us and unfair to the assistant. We show a loathing to the wrong person.
I think that bosses should get off their backs and alow the customer to approach the staff if need be.

Yeah, it makes me feel really intimidated and pressurised, if I want help then I will ask. I like to browse at my own leisure. Having worked in shops though I know how much stick you can get from your boss if you don't approach customers!

I've had that job before, and it always ticked me off when my supervisor made me constantly ask people if they wanted help even when it was obvious that they were "just looking."

I hate it when they pounce on you as soon as you walk through the door
I also hate it when you need help and they just ignore you or there is no one to be found
The poor assistant cant seem to win

No that doesnt bother me , I just thank them and say only looking, they are just doing their job well. What really does bug me , is lack of please and thankyou in shops these days, what ever happened to good manners with shop assistants, !.

Its their job, if u wanted help and didnt find anyone u would just call them inefficient. What bothers me is how they always ask if what i tried on is 'any good' and I have to answer no, i.e., your merchandise is crap. Cant they just wait 2 seconds to find out if Im going to buy it or not rather than ask and embarass me!

Oh yes it does. They should let you look as long as you like. And if I wanted to there help I would have ask for it myself. They should not rush anyone at all. Some people just like to look at everything they have to offer.
