Check this site out, http://www.bristol-aquarists.org.uk/goldfish/info/sexing-fs.htm

It explains with pics how to tell the difference. It may be harder to do if they are still young though.

It is very difficult to tell and although there are "signs" you can look for, it's not as easy as it sounds. Moreover, these signs pretty much only show during the time that the fish is ready for breeding, so if your fish isn't ready for breeding, you may never be able to tell. That said, males develop breeding tubercles (white pimples) on the gill covers and on the leading edge of the pectoral fins while females develop a deeper body as they fill with roe (eggs), and have a larger, convex vent (just before the anal fin) than the males, whose vent is more concave. Chasing isn't always a sign as, in the absence of a female, if a male is ready to spawn, he will chase other males. So, you may be best off to give a non-sex name or just call it a he or a she because it feels good to you!

My cousin told me that the way you tell if a beta fish is male or female, is that a male makes a "bubble nest" on the surface of the water so the (non'existent) female will lay the eggs there.

I don't know if this is true though, because my beta made a bubble nest the first few weeks then stopped. might be cause I kept wrecking it when I cleaned his tank. whups.
