Our church just put in new windows. We had candles in the windows over the holidays. Somehow the wax from the candles got onto the window pane. How do you get it off without scraping the glass?

Go to your local paint store and buy a razor blade scraper made especially for removing paint from glass windows. This will guarantee you don't scratch the glass. It would be preferable for the wax to be cold when you scratch it off... it'll come off much easier and likely, in one piece. If there is any leftover residue, use really HOT soapy water and wash the glass with it.

The bigger worry is how the wax got there in the first place. Is this church in a ghetto? Inhabitants may have been using the candles to cook dope. Check the security tapes.

If this is regular old everyday dead flat window glass, a razor blade will scrape it off no problem. If it is textured glass, then it gets a bit more difficult. Some kind of solvent, a brush, and a good supply of rags will be required.

If it is a composite plexiglass / lexan glass that one finds in the ghetto at check cashing stores, liquor stores and gas stations then it will scratch. Yeah, it's bullet proof against small arms fire and will protect the poor slob working behind the counter but the secret to it's strength is in it's resiliency. The surface is easily scratched and clouded if the wrong cleaners are used.

Unless you're using a diamond-encrusted tool, you don't have to worry about scratching the glass. I'm surprised it's giving you so much trouble. I've had candle wax on mirrored centerpieces before, and once it's cooled and hard, it always peeled right off with just my fingernail. You might just try that at first. You may be surprised how easy it comes off.

Take a fresh box cutter razor blade, hold it at an angle and scrape the wax off. It will not scratch flat glass.

Try using a hair blowdryer to re-melt the wax befor wiping it off. I just saw a commercial on T.V. that said to use a hot iron over a towel to melt wax off of carpet and onto the towel to remove wax from carpet if you have some there, too.

Ice cubes to make the wax hard and cold, then scrape with a single edged razor blade carefully and then rub it with oil and it will come off. Then clean with Windex.

Put Coke (soda pop) on a rag and scrub it off. My friend had someone wax the windshield of his car, he poured Coke on it and then ran the wipers. Came right off! Then clean the windows as usual to get the coke off.
