Especially because Bush said once he wished the US was a dictatorship because it would make his job a lot easier. Whereas Washington did actually turn down the job "President for life".
I do not say much bad about Bush because he is the President and you have to respect the office, even if you don't have a great deal of respect for the man. However, I remember the first time I saw the grand tableau in the Metropolitan Museum of Art of Washington crossing the Delaware. As I sat in front of it I was deeply moved (and call me a sop, I even felt a tear rolling down my cheek). This painting, which I had seen numerous times in books, epitomizes the birth of our proud nation.
When Bush compared himself to Washington, I tried to imagine an artist's rendition of Bush, in uniform, standing on the deck of a ship with a "Mission Accomplished" banner behind him and a silly grin on his face. And I cried not with pride, but with laughter.

George Washington was a founding father, respected and honest, George W. Bush is a arrogant and stubborn indvidual who has told lies to Congress and the American People, as well as to the world. His debacle and farce, The War and Occupation of Iraq is the result if his total incompetence as a world leader.

It seems to me there is history and there is myth. An ancestor of mine & his brother were among George Washington's bodyguards so we have a different history sometimes from what's passed down in some books. Anyway George Washington had to put up with some guy who was constantly on the political attack, didn't he?

Washington was famous for his self-deprecation and modesty. I rather doubt he would have compared himself to a national hero.
