The movie is clearly making fun of child beauty pagents, including, and especially, the exploitation aspect of it. You can tell by the look on Greg Kinear's face that there is something unsavory about the whole thing. He's not sure how to react. Olive herself isn't being exploited. She gets up and does her own thing. Meanwhile, all the brainwashed mothers and fathers in the audience think it's the biggest deal in the world. Those beauty pagents are wrong and absurd, and Little Miss Sunshine knows it. The movie itself is just so real and not over the top. Hopefully there's something in it that every middle-class family can relate to.

Did you watch it? It wasn't about her being exploited, but rather being completely supported by her family to realize her dream. Granted, little girl pageants can be exploitative, but this movie doesn't shy away from that fact, but rather finds the humor in it.
