In my college experience, I found that the first year away from home and all the scary things that are out there for young women to deal with can be overwhelming for some. Young women, especially for those in "women's studies" tend to become hyper sensitive to the issues of man/woman interaction and the dominance of men in our culture. It becomes easier to cluster with your other equally overwhelmed peers. I noticed that these groups would sit together in "their" places in the cafeteria and student union buildings. They would all hang out together and go to the various concerts and functions together. I even noticed that in some cases, these groups would start to look like each other ie: same clothing, same haircuts (usually short). And this being the time of personal discovery, a little lesbian experimenting is in order as well.
I took a Human Sexuality class and I was one of three men in class. We men were constantly having to explain our gender to the class and in some cases defend it as well. One LUG told the class in a defiant voice that "all men were potential rapists" I then asked," does that mean all women are potential victims?" Our lesbian teacher gave me the thumbs up.
LUGs tend to grow out of it when they discover that their femininity is a strength, not a weakness.

I don't share either side...I'm straight. Since this is an open question, I thought I'd share my opinion. Some women can be empowering, regardless of their persuasion. Since I don't "share their circle", I don't know if lesbians are disrespectful of other homosexuals. Either way, women won't be empowered or changed by anybody if they don't allow it to happen.

I am not nor ever was a LUG, or a real lesbian, so I guess I can't comment on how the gay community perceives LUGS.
Me personally, I find it sorta hilarious... it's just so, well... formulaic.
And btw I think you expressed your opinions when you said (oh god)
...lol ;)

I think that college is a normal time to experiment with one's sexuality and sexual preferences. Society doesn't like "experimentation," per se, and wants to label everyone. Therefore, women who are simply exploring tend to be categorized as lesbians (and categorize themselves that way, because they aren't comfortable with ambiguity). Some of them find out they really ARE lesbians; others realize that they prefer men; and some discover that they are bi.

I think they're young and will eventually find their paths, whatever they may be. I think there are too many labels on people everywhere, that that people try to push their own values and beliefs on other people.
I remember some really dumb things I did and said in my late teens and early twenties, I think we all do.

LUGs exist because it gives them more power in the feminist dominated universities where the realities of life don't exist.
Once LUGs graduate into the real world, Darwin's rules are a fact of life.
