"in the alternative" is a good way.

The U.S. >amounts to< only four percent of the world population, yet it creates twenty-two percent of the greenhouse gases."

or

The U.S. >makes up< only four percent of the world population, yet it creates twenty-two percent of the greenhouse gases."

another way: in adddition, additionally, moreover, conversely (if you are contrasting the aforementioned statement), thusly/consequently(if you are synthesizing the statements in the paragraph into a concluding idea)

the sentence would flow better like this:

"the us comprises only four percent of the global population, yet creates twenty-two percent of the greenhouse gases."

Let's see... You can say; "instead of", or "otherwise", or something like that... ... And your sentence would be better if you wrote that... "The U.S. has only four percent..."

How about: "additionally" or "in addition to"
The sentence looks correct to me by the way.
