1961 would be the year that the first true muscle car was introduced, the Chevrolet Impala SS. A mid-year option on the 1961 Impala was the Super Sport which was available on all body styles. In subsequent years the SS is limited to only sport coupes and convertibles. The SS package in 1961 was truly a performance package.

!958 Chevy Impalas were thought of as Super Sports, but the Logo Did'nt appear until 1961.

1961 as an option.all v8s.
1962 ,63.6or 8.still an option
1964 they were a stand alone vehicle not an option on a base model.i think they where only v8s but not 100% sure.
