You can ask the salesperson to explain it to you. Most people want "eye-clean", which you can check out yourself just by looking at it. Look for a yellow tint, any black specks, or any white inclusions that look like cracks. You can always get an appraisal done, but would be difficult to do pre- purchase.

By two things, the color and the inclusions... the less color and the less inclusions there are, the more it's gonna cost... If you can see noticeable inclusions with the naked eye I wouldn't recommend it... If you see that the diamond looks yellow, I wouldn't recommend that either... Of course the bigger they are, the better...
