I usually write my emails this way:
Hi Lynn,
How are you today?....(and I keep writing whatever it is I want to type here)

BUT
I've noticed some people do this:

Hi, Lynn
How are you today?.....

Does the comma have to be after "Hi" or after the person's name?

The comma goes after the salutation in a letter. What you do is correct.

The other people are just being sloppy.

In response to a later answerer. You could write "Hi, Lynn." or "Hi, Lynn!" (Note the punctuation at the end. Omitting it is sloppy.)

While the comma does go after the salutation, the other people are not "just being sloppy". In the English language, if you were to JUST say "Hi Lynn", it would both be proper to put a comma after "Hi" and also to not have a comma at all. In a letter, yes your writing style is correct. They're probably just mixed up.

You don't need a comma after the name and definately not after Hi. Once the greeting is typed ( Hi Lynn drop down two lines and begin the body of your letter to the person)

Hi Lynn

How are you doing? Just blah blah

I've seen lots of variations, but I've NEVER seen one like "Hi, Lynn".

after the person's name is the right way to do it
