He seems to be prevented from becoming king by the fact that his mother, the queen, continues to live.

Well you know that 80 year old woman everybody refers to as The Queen, its because of her tendency to still be alive. What a bloody cheek that woman has!

The Queen will be going for ages yet, she's still very fit and active, and considereing her mother lived to 102, she could be going for a long time yet

It's unlikely that Prince Charles would ever be king. It seems that at its time he will overhand the throne to his son William.

Because Queen Elizabeth is still alive. She is still the queen, and until she either relinquishes the crown or dies, Prince Charles will not be king.

But also because she was anointed as Queen and obviously she takes that very seriously.

The Queen took an oath to serve the people and to her this is not a job but a duty, so only death can take her position

His Mum is still very active and on the throne. She may live a very long life. I hope.

Charles will just have to wait. Maybe he will die, and maybe Wills will be the next monarch.

Because his mother, the regining Queen, hasn't passed away yet. *knocks on wood* And if he dies before his mother, although a mother should never have to bury her son, Prince William would just take his spot.
