Astrophysics answers such questions as where the universe came from, where the earth and humans came from, what the universe is like now and what the universe will be like in the future. I don't know what your age is but these are fundamental questions that everybody asks themselves. Astrophysics provides a scientific way to answer these questions.

It's easy to give lofty answers as to why anyone should study theoretical astrophysics, like, "Discovering the profound secrets of the universe, how it came into being, what lies in the future", together with being in the company of "the finest minds and Nobel Prize winners in the world", etc. Those are all very good, it's kind of like the New High Priesthood. But are there any practical applications from it? Yes, there are, and the two-fold answer is:

1) We are part of the universe, so if we expect to travel in it outside of this world in the future, we should have a very good understanding of it.

2) Findings in astrophysics can have a direct impact on our understanding of fundamental particles and forces, which WILL drive technology in the future. Astrophysics isn't just an ivory tower endeavor, it will have a very real impact on man, as it already has in the past few centuries. Remember, Newton's Laws started out as an effort to understand "the physics of the solar system".

Without previous studies in theoretical physics, we would never have been able to make transistors, integrated circuits, computers, cell phones and so on. There is no telling what great future inventions might come from the present studies of theoretical physics.

That's how we figure out a lot of basic things. Electricity was once an obscure theoretical study - look where that has gotten us. String theory, m-theory, brane theory, general relativity, all these fields can potentially tell us how the universe works, and who knows what they could open up next?

Why not know how the universe works? Why is matter in small groupings separated by vast empty voids? What is the future of our sun and our universe?

Some people wish to know the answers to those questions. If you don't that's your choice.
