It is a letter that goes before your resume. The cover letter tells who you are in a professional manner, you may include where you found the job and why it it right for you. This may be the place to explain a lapse in work, a job that lasted only a few months, etc. Keep it professional, not too personal, about 1/3 to 1/2 a page in most cases and not too repetitive of what the resume says. Good luck!
