well carpet is only sold in 12ft and 15 ft widths. so you need to keep this in mind when calculating how much carpet you need. If all of your rooms are less than 12 ft wide you take the running length of these rooms and multiply by 12 (the width of the carpet) then divide by 9

There are 9 sq feet in each square yard. (3 times 3).
Divide your number by 9.

Well, there's 9 sq. ft. in a square yard, so 1175 / 9 = 130.56 sq. yds.
