Neither and both. AMerica fights wars that its leaders feel promote American interests. AMerican interests include esoteric values (freedom, justice) as well as more firm economic and strategic interests.

If it were in Americas best strategic interest to promote a government who's existence would harm it economically but ensure another interest that seems more valuable, it would.

And for the person above who said wars are good for the economy - that is folk knowledge that is absolutely 100% wrong. Wars are disasterous economically, forcing large amounts of capital to be siphoned away from the citienry who would spend it in economy expanding ways, and then expended that capital for 0 real economic expansion. Wars are good for a super-minority of individuals. We call them war profiteers.

Capital and economic reasons most definitely. Freedom? That's a joke. Bush could care less about freedom in Iraq, Afghanistan or Palestine. Why does he not care about peoples freedoms in Cuba? maybe because they dont have any oil or pipelines? You do the math.

capitalistic reasons.

our gov't ignores tyranny where we have no economic interests, but places with oil are always on the front of the line.

I'm not a fan of Chavez, but he's three times been elected by his people. Yet our gov't and the corporate media paint him as if he's the next Hussein/Castro. Why? Venezuala has oil!

All wars are about resources. "Freedom" is a nice way to sell the war to the public.

I'd go with the reason Sammer said, the US fights wars for different reasons, but always to promote US interests..

War is good for the economy. I cast my vote for capital/economic reasons. Wish they were honest about it, tho. Specially since I live here now.
