I'm looking to buy a jig saw. I already own a off brand miter saw and a Ryobi circular saw. I have a small project to use it for now, but in the future I'm not sure yet. What features should I look for? Is a $30 at 3.5 amps good enough for most things or do I need to go with a $50-$60 one with @ 5 amps? What do you think?

the Model 1597 Bosch, or its new replacement, is the most popular jig saw in the US. If you are going to insist on Ryobi or Dewalt, you will get what you pay for - junk. All of my electric tools are Bosch and I have been using them for 20 years without ever having a problem and I use them all the time.

Adopt a philosophy of buying the best the first time and then never having to buy that tool again.

I had a cheap jig saw bought from an ACO store, I think it was a "Farmington Series". It wound up in the garbage can. It was a total piece of junk. I've used my father-in-laws Dewalt several times. I'll buy my own as soon as I can afford it.

Buy a Bosch. I have a lot of power tools of various brands. I have favorites for every tool and when it comes to jig saws I use a Bosch. Remember: buy the best. You'll never be disappointed with the quality.

Make sure it uses a motor not a vibrator. Also make sure it is easy to replace the blades. There are pined blades and straight blades. How deep a throat is also important.
