If I'm not mistaken, Borax is a cleaning agent. I'm pretty sure you can purchase it in the laundry soap aisle of the grocery store.

If you are interested in the amazing history of the mining of Borax, here is a link to Death Valley, CA, National Park - one of the major places where Borax used to be mined. http://www.nps.gov/deva/faqs.htm Note the photo of the 20-mule team used to carry out the minerals, this is why you will see a laundry product, in stores now, called "Twenty Mule Team Borax".
The above link also gives you a good description of Borax and what it is & how it's used.
The national park has many relics & borax info for you to see, tours too, if you can visit there.

It is a laundry booster often used as a color-safe bleaching agent. It is commonly used in the soaking water in diaper pails for cloth diapers. Instead of using both regular detergent and "detergent with (colorsafe) bleach", you can just use regular detergent and add a little borax to loads that would benefit from the booster -- light colors and heavily soiled loads. It also has various uses as a cleaning agent around the house. Chemically is is similar to baking soda, so it can help remove odors.
The most common brand is "20 Mule Team" and can be found in various stores in the laundry aisle.
