I heard last year that Stephen Donaldson had sold the rights to the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant to a production company set up called Revelstone. Do you think these books will make a good film?

Personally I think they will, but it will be interesting to see how they deal with the rape scene in book 1. It's not as though they can leave it out either as it's an integeral part of the book which has repercussions in the following books too.

Anyone have any other thoughts on this?

Though i kind of enjoyed these books... i found them so dark and depressing i wouldn't like to revist them in any form... the film version would have to have the same kind of budget as TLOTR and yes the rape would have to be there... they should spend the money on making Donaldson's Gap series which i loved.

Make a good film? No, I think the chances are vanishingly small. And not just on the abysmal track record for converting any fantasy book to film.

So much of what is critical happens in Covenant's own mind, and difficult to put on film. What is likely to be left is a "lone hero out of his place and time" story. Which is not what Donaldson wrote.
