To me and only my opinion. Standing up for ones self is when others patronize you. Judas you and all around talk trash about you behind your back or even to your face. You have a right to stand up and be counted for your merits and dispute negative feedback from others. However, this slippery slope of complaining verses rectifiable self expression can be ambiguous. We humans love to complain, its our nature. That's why they call it CONFLICT THEORY.
Use complaining for it's intended purpose. To blow steam and let and vent out some anger. Be sure this other person that you hold their ear understands this. Otherwise its just whining and or belly aching.

Standing up for oneself will help you achieve the respect of others. Complaining will help you achieve a hammer to the skull.

I think it's all in the attitude and the way you express your feelings. If you are standing up for yourself you should have valid statements backing up your position without sounding deffensive. Complaining is trying to express what others have done to you or stating things that you think are not fair to you. It's all about the way you word it and your attitude while speaking.

You can stand up for yourself- without having to say a WORD. -Whereas most complainers do nothing BUT use words to voice their positions. The noisy ones can be ignored; those who take a "stand" are the strong ones.

I think one has nothing to do with the other.
Complaining is trying to get someone to change their behavior.
Standing up for yourself is deciding if you will allow others to control your life.
A simple rule for practicing the difference is:
Do not complain, and no need to explain.

Standing up for yourself usually means that someone isn't respecting you, your decisions, or who you are. When you stand up for yourself, you show that you're proud of who you are.
Complaining is an immature way of trying to make things go your way.
