Visit an online RAM seller such as crucial.com. Many of them have online tools which will scan your system, and show how much RAM you have now, what slot(s) it's installed in, whether you have any open slots, and, yes, the maximum your machine can take.

Another possibility is to check the manufacturer's website for the specs on your system. But I've found that even with something like a Dell where I can just type in the service tag and get my machine's information, it's still faster to get the RAM info if I just go to Crucial and have it do a scan. Good luck!

It's easy to get RAM and Hard Disk space confused. When people get an "out of memory" error message from their computer, they often think their hard drive is too full, when in reality, the RAM (memory) is getting too full. Here's a chart which may help you think about the difference between RAM and Hard Disk storage space.

The best way is to go to your manufacturer's website for your computer/laptop and looking up the model number on your computer. Usually, there will a "tech sheet" or some kind of paper on there that shows you all the technical specifications on your perticular computer. If you go down to the RAM and/or Memory part of the paper (or it may be under Motherboard Specifications, depending on who makes your computer) , you should be able to find how much RAM your computer's motherboard will accept, and what type (how many pins and the speed).

You can:
-check the computer mfr's website
-if you know what motherboard is you can check that mfr's website
-post your computer's info so someone else can help, specifically brand and model number
-you can also use the crucial system scanner; it will tell you what you currently have, the total you can have and give a suggestion of what to have. The link is to Crucial's (major memory mfr) website.

Get Belarc Advisor, free from www.belarc.com, and install it. It will tell you how much RAM you have now and how many free slots are available to install more.

If no more slots available, replace existing RAM with larger size.

You go into start menu then go to the settings then click on control pannel. After you do that go around the bottom icons and click on the icon that says system. Then a screen comes up and at the bottom of the screen it should say a number then RAM the number is how much ram your computer has.

You need to take a look at your Motherboard.

Go to the manufacturer's website and search for specifications on your Motherboard model number.

Alternatively, you can look for hardware reviews on your Motherboard. They usually tell you everything you need to know.
