How often should I get the brakes serviced? How do I avoid brake service ripoffs?

Brake service is the biggest ripoff in the car repair industry that I have seen. Brakes are easy to work on yourself and parts are cheap. The prices that repair shops get are ridiculous and they always want to do more than is needed.

Usually, only the front brakes need service too. The rears have relatively little to do with stopping your car (because of the shift of weight to the front during stopping).

You can get a set of pads and a bottle of fluid at Autozone for usually about $30 with a lifetime guarantee. When they wear out, just exchange them for free.

If your rotors need surfacing, that can be done by many shops or parts stores for about $10 each or replacements may be only about $25 each. Don't let some shop take you to the cleaners.

well in the shop i work in what he described would be r&r front or rear brakes
in other words replace front or rear brakes

in the shop i work in servicing front and rear brakes consists of:
rear brakes- if they are drum style we open the drum remove all brake dust, lubricate the section where the shoe possibly might rub up against in the back of the drum to prevent noise, inspect wheel cylinders to see if they are good or siezed, check shoes for uneven wear, and inspect hardware to make sure there is nothing broken and check the park brake to see if it is siezed or not.

front brake service. remove caliper make sure dust boot is not damaged, make sure caliper piston is not siezed and same for the caliper guide pins. Make sure brake hoses and brake lines are not damaged or leaking, make sure bleeder is not siezed or broken, and lubricate the pads backing plate.
