I don't know about chess, as far as squares but it would be in the billions. If you worked for 1 penny the first day of work and doubled it for 30 days you would make something like 7 million dollars.

Gazzillions.........have no idea how to write it but coming towards the end I think it reads one hundred and fifty three billion, six hundred and seventy three million, eight hundred thousand, two hundred and fifteen.

I did this with pen and paper, the long way, and looking at the other answers I seem to have found a lot more peas. Ah well.... I might do it again when my brain cools down.

9.223372036 × 10¹⁸ the only problems would be finding enough peas, and making sure that they didn't fall off the squares. That's a lot of peas.

well.. i got two answers for you, one is this:
9.223372037x10^18

and the second one is that you wouldn't find that many peas to begin with and if you did then not all of them would be able to stay on the 64th square. i'm sure theres an equation but i can't think of it.

more than all the tea in china.. and possibly india.

blue peter did this when i was a kid, and they used grains of rice...somehwre around square 20 they had so much rice it filled a huge warehouse...

and i think that if you start off on square one with a penny, youre a mumti millionaire at teh end..
