Traveling abroad?

what should i do to make my chances better when filling out my application. like would it help if i joined clubs or something? and what should i do to get ready to go? i'm planning to go to spain, so any suggestions? what type of stuff should i take and how much spending money, etc...? just some advice would be really helpful. Thanks!
