Question about Job Deferment?

Has anybody ever asked for a job deferment (in the sciences- Lab Tech. kind of jobs) and was granted one? Are employers usually keen on granting job deferments?

For how long and for what purpose? As a general rule, a job opening means that there is a specific need for a person. Any deferment longer than a few weeks is probably a non-starter.
