I think technology can play a big role. What ways do you think technology can help for this purpose? Also, except technology, what else can be done?

Indian Railways covers approximately 65,000 Route Kilometres and runs about 14500 trains daily which, by all accounts, is a formidable task.

Safety issues have plagued railways in developed countries as well. Recent examples are safety problems faced by Connex (Melbourne Australia) owing to faulty trains and the latest UK train crash due to defective track.

The safety involves addressing Four Ts: trains, tracks, technology and training of staff. In case of India, the fifth T - terrorist acts - always comes into play. And out of these, the technology can complement the other three/four at all times.

The safety issues in case of Indian Railways can be better addressed by improved technology, particularly the signalling equipment and other track safety devices,as also the control rooms. Providing live communications with drivers on all trains and subsequently a video link could go a long way in improving safety.

However, historical evidence tend to suggest that most train accidents in India have been due to human negligence (railway staff) or intervention (sabotage and terrorist acts). Therefore, staff training, boosting physical security of stations, trains and tracks by enhanced patrolling, surprise checks, sniffer dogs and installing CCTVs could prove to be some good measures.
