andrew johnson was impeached in 1869, because of many reasons.

1. he supported former confederate soldiers and their cause by giving blacks less rights because they would "operate" against whites.

2. before his impeachment, congress passed the tenure act of office which prohibited the president from firing his cabinet. andrew johnson did not listen to this law, and he fired one of his cabinet members.

Johnson was impeached in 1868, not 1869. By 1869, he was no longer President, as Grant took office on March 4 of that year.
