Buy the March 2007 edition of "WHAT LAPTOP" magazine £3.99 from W H Smiths or another retailer. The magazine recommends some machines under £500. Their best buy is the Toshiba Satellite Pro A120 for £489. (The Dell Inspiron 1300 is £399, but is only available for purchase online)
There is also an article about buying second-hand and reconditioned laptops, which should even be cheaper.
The magazine educates you generally on what features to look for in laptops.

Check out Staples Office supplies - mention that you have seen one in PC WORLD and the price and they usually undercut them! Got my Laptop from Staples for £400 and I got some freebies as well - laptop carry bag and some blank DVD - R's - saved £100 on PC WORLD price!
But in all fairness - most shops can do you a good deal on a laptop for under £500
