Well there is cool and there is not so cool. Most star fish die while in transit. leading the stores to grab what they can from suppliers. A pink star or a mottled Starfish

If you have knowledge of keeping starfish they are great to have. Most end up starving to death in tanks. Star fish need to be target fed twice a week. They are great on their own but can quickly clean up a tank then requireing more food. When you purchase a star fish, be sure it is healthy and moving around. Most suppliers don't understand the star fish and while they are waiting to be shipped slowly starve to death.

Johnnathan, your tank needs to be running for 6 months before you can get a star fish!

There's "cool" and there "what you can keep alive in a small tank". Not to mention the "what won't eat the rest of the stuff you have in the tank".

Bat stars are cool ,predatory, and need a mature tank of around 300 gallons (they are cool, though - I have a baby (<1") that came in on a piece of live rock and was "banished" to my quarantine tank). I also like basket stars - same story, but they can get by with a 200 gallon tank.

First you need to get your tank cycled and running for a while before you even think about a star of any kind (I'm a real downer, aren't I? - One thing you learn in saltwater is PATIENCE!). Then, you should consider if you need one that is "reef safe" or not. Given your tank size, I'd look at a small brittle star (you can keep this in a 30 with supplemental feeding, but they'd like bigger) - you can get these in a nember of colors and are reef safe. Chocolate chip stars are popular & hardy, but aren't reef safe. See this article for more info on sea stars: http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-06/ac/feature/index.php
