I am planning to build a house, and I am wondering about how long will it take.
It will probably be around a 3,500 to 4,000 sq ft colonial.

That depends on a number of things. Location, If you live in a cold climate, weather may delay construction, as may rain in the south. Builder, some builders prefer to move more deliberately than others.
Generally speaking, six months to a year is a good time span for a 4000 sq. ft home. Once the site is prepared, and the foundation set, the "bones", or framing should be completed as quickly as possible. This is done to enable the house to be "dryed in". This will enable other trades to work out of the elements, and protect the framing from water. After things are dryed in, construction seems to slow to a crawl. There are many trades involved, and things should be done in a specific order, so if one contractor causes a delay, the others get backed up as well. A good GC will keep these delays to a minimum, by hiring sub-contractors he knows he can trust.

You haven't provided enough info. Single or double storey? Split level? Foundation concrete block or poured concrete? Stick framed on site or pre-fabed?
Availability of sub trades? (Here is one where money talks, and talk walks)
would need the plans to give you a definite answer, but plan 12 to 16 weeeks
