Oxygen is vital to a living organism... your body is not saying that your suffocating (oops spelling) but it's saying that at that point in time you need more oxygen whether it's for waking up as in you body is moving to the next level of physical activity before it's ready... many people believe it's contagious but the mind is stronger than the body and what you believe... you will do. Yawning is not contagious and it is not always because you need oxygen its a mixture of both but you don't have to believe me right now cause I'm really drunk its just that some of these answers are ridiculous...............

Because u are letting out air when u yawn and you need to open your mouth because your letting out too much air for your nose to handle

yawning is taking deep breaths of air to fill out your lungs, it is easier to open your mouth for that than taking in the air from your nostrils

Because that is how it works. The open their mouths when they want to eat or talk also.

Your chest needs to stretch and expand, therefore your mouth opens to intake a larger amount of air than your nose would allow.
