You should starting looking into what colleges you want to possibly attend during your junior year. Then start applying during your senior year. Most high schools have a deadline to when they will need to have all the application material by to submit to the colleges. It's important for you to make this deadline, so the earlier you start looking into it, the better.
If you have any other questions on when you should start applying, I suggest for you to talk to your school counselor.

If you have been active in many activities, sports, enjoyed a solid GPA and have taken the SAT'S apply earlier in your Senior year. If you need a little time to improve on grades in some areas, wait until the middle, around the Holiday Break. Keep your grades strong and don't wait until the last minute to get those applications mailed out. Keep in mind the last month of school will go quickly and you need to study for finals and keep your schedule free to spend time with your friends... that is an important part of this accomplishment.

!st off, you better have someone proof read your application(s) as you said begging instead of beginning. That would be a big issue in getting into college (OR NOT),more so then when you applied. Check the individual schools deadlines and start as early as you can. Take your SAT's, etc. and make sure that you don't slack off in your senior year. IT DOES COUNT!!! Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!

You should probably start at the beginning of your senior year if you're planning to apply to private universities. Some of the private colleges don't accept common application so it's a disadvantage for you if you have to write a personal essay for that college. Public universities, such as UC are not so demanding so if you're sure that you're aiming for UC's, then don't worry too much until November.

Beginning of your senior year. I'd recommend obtaining the apps at the end of your junior year and starting the essays at the end of your junior year (the essay is by far the most time-consuming part of it).

Depends on which college. Different colleges have different deadlines. For example, UC apps were due on Nov. 30th, but most private school apps weren't due till Jan. 1st.
