First of all bcAquatic is correct that Bettas can live in unheated water (within reason). You need to understand that these fish came from monsoonal areas where they are often in puddles in the dry season, which even in the tropics can occasionally drop under 70 F at night.

With heat your betta of coarse will be more active.
The desk lamp is an idea I have written about in some of my articles, the exception being it MUST have an infrared reptile bulb instead of a clear bulb. The lack of day/night cycle will cause more problems than a temperature of say 65 F.
If you do use a desk lamp, make sure and have a thermometer to help regulate the distance of the lamp from the bowl.

Also I cannot recommend the Hydor Heater. I have been in this business a long time and continue to test products and we passed on this one after testing it. There are NO controls to regulate temperatures and it is highly unpredictable.

There are small heter made just for this type of situation. Here's a link to one place that sells them. You can find them at many, many places on the web so be sure to shop around for the best price.

A single male betta will do quite well in a 1.5 gallon bowl as long as you keep the water clean and warm. It is a ttal and complete myth that bettas need more space than that to be healthy.

As I answered in your last question, bettas need to be kept at 78-82 degrees F and anyone who says their fish are doing fine in unheated water is not providing the healthiest environment that they could. Yes, a fish may survive lower water temperatures, but they are not happy. When you raise the temperature to a proper level and provide a more than adequate space in which to live, you will see these fish come to life. Also, fish do not belong in bowls. None of them. Instead of trying to find a smaller watt heater, get a larger aquarium. 5 gallons for a betta would be paradise. You will have a much healthier, happier fish because of it.
