yupWe may say, then, that a comet is formed when the upper motion introduces into a gathering of this kind a fiery principle not of such excessive strength as to burn up much of the material quickly, nor so weak as soon to be extinguished, but stronger and capable of burning up much material, and when exhalation of the right consistency rises from below and meets it. The kind of comet varies according to the shape which the exhalation happens to take. If it is diffused equally on every side the star is said to be fringed, if it stretches out in one direction it is called bearded. We have seen that when a fiery principle of this kind moves we seem to have a shooting-star: similarly when it stands still we seem to have a star standing still.

Simply put - a shooting star is what we see when a foreign body enters the atmosphere and burns up on the entry. This is usually a small asteroid particle. Comets are giant iceballs (snowballs) that travel in parabollic or hyperbollic arcs around the earth. They leave particles behind and when the earth passes thru their "clouds" we have meteor showers, which we call shooting stars. So shooting stars can be asteroids or particles left over "from" a comet. But not a comet itself. Comets dont move that fast.

No actually. A shooting star in a meteorite burning up as it skims the Earths atmosphere. Comets and Asteroids are much further out and would cause some serious damage.

no. A shooting star is a burning ball of gas, where comets and asteroids are clumps of matter that create heat from the traction when they fall down to earth.
