You can visit the US under the Visa Waiver Program for a maximum of 90 days if you are there for a short visit (the time is at the discretion of theborder guard but they typcially give 90 days). You will need at least 6 months left on your passport and must be biometirc if issued on or after 26th October 2006; machine readable if issued before. If you are planning to move to the US, you are better of speaking to the US Embassy. The Foreign Office http://www.fco.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagename=OpenMarket/Xcelerate/ShowPage&c=Page&cid=1007029396086 will have contact details.

Assuming you have a machine readable passport from the UK you may enter the USA as a toursit for a period of 90 days without a visa.

Start at the US embassy in London. If you are only visiting, they will probably allow you to stay 6 months.
