I have a 10 gallon tank, which is empty at the moment. I want to get a Male betta and a couple of mollies, (i have read that these are compatible) but i was also considering a couple of coolie loaches..can anyone tell me if this would work or suggest any other options for tankmates for the betta?

my boyfriend keeps tropical fish but just has never had a betta before so we are at a bit of a loss other than "no fin nippers or fish with long fins"

The fish you list would be just fine at tank mates for a male betta. There is no way under the sub to really list all the fish that would be compatible and the previous list has some fish on it that certainly are NOT comparable with a male betta (bala sharks and angelfish to point out two).

Just use your head to select peaceful community type fish that are similar in size to the betta and you'll be fine.

Male betta's are only aggressive toward other male bettas. You can keep one in a community aquarium with other calm and non-aggressive tropical fish including tetras, danios and guppies. If you have a pet shop near you that specializes in tropical fish, you will often see one male betta in each of the aquariums with non-aggressive fish rather than in those little individual bowls like at Wal-Mart.

The complete list of tropical fish compatible with a single male betta:
Platies
Swordtails
Mollies
Goodeids
Halfbeaks
Harlequin Rasboras
Neon Tetras
Black Widow Tetras
Merry Widow Tetras
Serpae Tetras
Glowlight Tetras
Headlight Taillight Tetras
Black Neon Tetras
Rummynose Tetras
Cardinal Tetras
Blue Tetras
Gold Tetras
Black Phantom Tetras
Bleeding Heart Tetras
Glass Fish
Corydoras Catfish
Clown Plecostomus
Dwarf Gouramis
Cosby Gouramis
Pearl Gouramis
Moonlight Gouramis
African Dwarf Frogs
Angel Fish
Kuhli Loaches
Dojo Loaches
White Cloud Mountain Minnows
Zebra Danios
Pearl Danios
Leopard Danios
Clown Loaches
Red Tailed Black Sharks
Bala Sharks

Be careful about the mollies you select. There is a sailfin molly that has long flowing tail and dorsel fins that the male betta may think is another male betta.

i'm no longer valuable and wont say specific as others have reported no many a time yet i be attentive to that folk say which you would be able to no longer have 2 male bettas in a tank or in line with danger a woman and male. none of that's real, making valuable you have an excellent sort of hiding areas, and a nicely planted and sufficiently enormous tank for the different fish to retreat and cover. additionally based on the betta. how briskly a swimmer he's and how agressive. I even have had the two mixes of adult males and adult males, and adult males and ladies people in a tank mutually making valuable to have an excellent sort of area to cover, be it plant life logs or rocks. i had a betta which could opt to cover in a cave made for a breeding pair of bristlenose catfish. yet another element to element in is the dimensions of your betta in assessment to the glow fish. in the event that they're concerning to an identical length then you definately could be secure. so the respond i assume is in all probability specific. the 2nd area of the question is for specific the betta will oftentimes be the guy who has to get used to the recent atmosphere and so on. so the glow fish are greater valuable being put in first till they're acclimatised. just to be on the secure area i could attempt it with basically one pass fish and the betta formerly each thing and spot how that is going. then in case you like introduce greater despite if that's determining.

You just want to make sure that the other fish are about the same size as the betta and not too aggressive. I have a couple of dojo loaches with mine, and they get along just fine. The betta should not attack unless 1) he is with another betta or long-finned fish or 2) he is attacked or nipped at first. Just don't get too many other fish in your tank because they will get territorial. Bettas are pretty docile unless they're provoked.

I don't think you should get mollies with a ten gallon tank. The mollies alone would need at least a 20 gal. You could have a few tetras in your tank with the Betta. Or if you want babies, you could get some Platies. But DON'T get Guppies or any other long-tailed fish, as the Betta will most likely kill them. Also don't get any aggressive fish, like barbs, just stick with small community fish.

i have been breeding bettas professionally for the past 13 years, from my experience with tropical fish, mollies wouldnt be a good idea. Mollies need a larger tank than a 10 gallon and would prefer more brackish water conditions.

with bettas, try going with a pair of cherry barbs. Also try some small school of cories for the bottom.

You have to avoid the barbs and any other fin nippers. The betta's fins attract a lot of nipping because they are so slow moving.

Betta fish are "happier" in a small bowl where there isn't too much water movement but should do fine in a 10 gallon aquarium. Kuhli loaches and loaches/botias in general wouldn't bother the betta nor visa versa. Angel fish & Gouramis would be a major NO NO they nip fins alot. Coridoras, small tetras and danios would be great.

kuhli loaches would be great. I've got 3 black kuhlis with my betta. Mollies do get too big though, some varieties can get 6-8 inches.
