Black is a color if you are ordering a new car. Imagine telling the dealer that you want the car painted with the absence of all color, you would get primer grey. Also black is a color when printing, in fact usually the most important ink. In visual work, it takes dark shadows to give modeling to a subject. If the lighting is totally flat, it is hard to make out shapes. A color does not need a place on the color wheel to have mystic, emotion and attraction. What does Pantone say - black comes in 40 shades.

Black is the color of Nothingness. It must have been the first color to ever exist and at the end of time, would be the last to go. Black is a color that awes me. When I stand in a dark and quiet room with the lights all turned off, I feel this great wonder at the blackness.

Colour theory lesson 1:
Black is NOT a colour (neither is white, by the way). Black is the absence of colour (thumbs up farien3 and sorry Lizzieboredom, it's the other way round). Black absorbs all colours (light) and reflects none.
If you need to think of it, think of it as death: it takes, but it doesn't give.

I think black is supposed to be all colors combined--white is the absence of all color. Black is a wonderful color to display all different types of moods: sadness, fear, loneliness. It's such a versatile color--black IS beautiful!

Firstly, it's not a color. It is the absence of all color.
However, it can indeed be used to express a variety of ideas.
