In regards to your first question, there are so many Western food chains in Egypt it's absolutely ludicrous!!! I cannot say for sure what will be in Luxor, but the Sphinx in Giza is now staring at a Pizza Hut across the street from where it stands. Other chains in Egypt (mostly in Cairo but some are probably in other places as well) are: Hardee's, McDonald's Kentucky Fried Chicken, Chili's, and more. There are other restaurants that mimic Western style that are pretty reputable.

As far as vegetarian entrees go, believe me you will be hard-pressed to find a place that doesn't offer the classic falafel (ta''amiya in Cairo) which is made from chick peas and other veggies. Lentil soup is also big there as well as cheeses, grape leaves (there are vegetarian and meat varieties so get that clarified), fried/stewed eggplant, koshary (rice, lentils, fried onions, pasta and tomato sauce, all in one dish) and many other options. Most of this is dirt cheap but if you want to a place that looks more appealing, hygiene wise, you will pay more (but still not a lot). You will not lack for vegetarian options if only you can find something you like. A lot of this food is sold at Middle Eastern delis and stores throughout the US if you want to sample some of it before getting there.

Enjoy your trip!

well if your going to luxor there is a macdonalds right next luxor temple and a pizza hut near the sheraton. But there are also some excellent restaurants around luxor most of which sell vegetarian food as long as you eat in a decent restaurant you will be fine. The egyptians eat a lot of vegetarian dishes, and i find many of them delicious.
maxims, jems, the sonesta hotel , the sheraton, all in same area are all good restaurants. Maxims does egyptian food and if you go there before the evening i am sure they will arrange something for you if you ask.they are very helpful. they also do a blinding fillet steak. i will be there again in 6 weeks and i cant wait, i love their food.

Nearly any national food chain in America can be found in Egypt. McDonalds, Pizza Hut, KFC, Subway, etc... but you really shouldn't worry too much about it since there are tons of wonderful vegetarian options in local cuisine. Mashi is a vegetable stuffed with rice spices, and herbs. It is often stuffed cabbage or grape leaves(ofthen known to westerners by the greek name dolma) but, can also be stuffed eggplant, green pepper, zuchini, etc.. Hummos is a chickpea and tahini mixture that is ground into a dip that is ofter eaten with pita bread. Baba Ghanough is also vegetarian and is a dip made from eggplant. Salad is everywhere as is fresh fruit. They have many lentil soups that are vegetarian as well as a soup called moulokhia which is a green plant related to jute I believe and is chopped and made into a soup that is unique in it's texture and flavor. Falafel is also vegetarian and is called ta'amia in Egypt, it's made from chickpeas as well. There will always be something completely vegetarian no matter where you go in Egypt so don't liit yourself to the same old cheap fast food that you can eat in the US.

There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan items available there. There is a McDonald's in Luxor (behind the Luxor temple), however be forewarned, McDonald's in the M.E. doesn't taste the same as in America. Same as places like Pizza Hut, Burger King etc.

why in the world would you want to eat at McDonald's or Burger King going to Egypt is beyond my comprehension; why don't you stick with their native food and learn something about their culture; there is where you learned about people; adventure a little and learn the riches this world have to offered.
so when you come back you can talk to people about the different kinds of food in Egypt, the way they serve it the way it taste, the way it looks; and so on. you will be a very interesting person. Good Luck and i wish i would be going with you.

Hi, well they do have McDonalds in Egypt I just can't believe that you want to go to Egypt and eat crappy food like that. You're not really experiencing anything about their cuisine, I mean they do have vegetarian food there, you can have what is called Mousaka'a, it is soooooooooo good and its made out of vegetables with spice and you eat with rice.
