why is it that people of other races sometimes have a problem with BET and other black tv shows. does anyone not realize that almost all of the shows on tv are geared towards whites and white audiences. It is quite obvious that AMERICANS are truly not treated equally by fellow '"AMERICANS" , if it were so then there would be more tv shows with races of all colors on all of the times. is there any black or chinese soap operas. not that i know of. SO WHY DO PEOPLE GET UPSET BECAUSE BLACKS HAVE BET AND A FEW OTHER THINGS FOR BLACK PEOPLE. IF NOT THERE WOULD REALLY BE NOTHING FOR ANYONE EXCEPT THE WHITE RACE. THERE SHOULD BE SHOWS FOR ALL AUDIENCES, SINCE THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE GREAT MELTING POT!

Good point. I think it's the name that makes people mad...I mean with "white" television, it's not called "white television" and black people are allowed on there. But with BET, there's boundaries and it's much more in-your-face which aggravates some people.

I think people in general love to make controversial statements about anything that pertains to racial profiling. I have noticed the many agree questions on BET and Black History Month. My only thing is many Black people don't appreciate what Black History Month is supposed to mean for us. Freedom for ALL people, not just us. We can't say that ALL African Americans or Americans period for that manner have made a difference in todays society. At the same time, many people who want to lash out at Black culture and or anyone's culture is just trying to make people feel even worse about their own people. Non Black Americans know that Black people fight amongst eachother, but it's no different with any other race, but someone has to be a target for the media and society, so that's when this whole "Black people are violent" statement comes into play. All this derogatory towards Blacks people, but others do the same thing we do. I think everyone needs to put all the stereotypes aside. When I speak about being Black or Black people, it's because I'm coming from my point of view as a Black person, just like someone could talk for people White, Asian, Hispanic, etc. We all know there are bad seeds in every race and not one in particular.

You don't? How about Mr. Willis and Bentley on the Jeffersons? The white cop on Sanford and Son? Even, in a way, Urkel on Family Matters? Urkel, while not strictly white, played a geekyness, for most of the show, only seen in white characters, on black shows. Seeming to take advantage of the fact that white shows didn't dare respond in kind(although there wasn't a phrase to describe political correctness in the '70's, it surely existed even then,) but then, as now, it still couldn't be played both ways.

Such strong words from a person who uses the racist generalization of BLACK to refer to African Americans. When you say black this and black that you are assigning us a color not an ethnic group and a negative color at that. Black means evil, bad, emptiness, and so on so when you call African Americans by the color black instead of recognizing their heritage you are feeding the stereotype and adding to the racist perception already prevalent in this country. And in regards to your posting, you are right. There should be shows geared for All races in this country but the population is predominately caucasian and that is the audience that is catered too. The tv stations would not make money if they played equality in this matter. And do you notice when they do have an "African American" representative it's mostly a bi-racial lighter person with the curly hair down to their shoulders?

what people have problems with is the message that these programs send--that they are geared to a race.

since we are on a path to racially diversifying most programs how about we get rid of these programs that have no problem to advertise that they are geared toward a specific race. (black entertainment, asian channel, hispanic channel, et cetera)

or how about we level the playing field and let all races have programs for their race?

damn good question. i think the people who dislike BET , MOBO awards etc just hate black people, period. They dont want us to have anything. They like to see us underepresented, un-catered for, ignored and frustrated. Thats why i pay no mind to them, there is no pleasing some people.

I do think, however, that the names of these shows could be made less race specific - although i dont know what word people would use instead of black.
