1989: Soccer fans crushed at Hillsborough
At least 93 football supporters have been killed in Britain's worst-ever sporting disaster.
They were crushed to death at Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield during the FA Cup semi-final between Nottingham Forest and Liverpool.
The crush is said to have resulted from too many Liverpool fans being allowed in to the back of an already full stand at the Leppings Lane end of the ground.
More than 2,000 Liverpool fans had still not got into the stadium when the match started at 1500.
A police spokesman said orders were given for the gate to the stand to be opened because they believed the pressure of fans outside the ground was "a danger to life".
But as fans rushed in, those already there were pushed forward and crushed against the high, wired-topped safety fences.
However, it was more than five minutes into the match before what was happening became apparent to those not in the Leppings Lane stand.
Then, alerted by fans spilling through a narrow gap onto the pitch or being lifted by others into the seating areas above, a policeman ran onto the field and ordered the referee to stop the game.

A major tragedy in English Football. The Leppings Lane end of Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough ground became a scene of unimaginable carnage. I blame the police personaly - they fecked up big time. I will never forget the last game of that season when Arsenal played Liverpool for the championship decider and all the Arsenal players brought out flowers and gave them to the Liverpool fans.

At Hillsborough in those days, the crowd was quite close to the pitch and behind a fence. Too many fans were let into the stand behind the goal where the Liverpool supporters were and were all squashed against the fence. Then people died because they did not have enough air coming in and people died because of being squashed against the fence. In the end, the fence fell down and supporters ran on to the pitch. The match was then abandoned.

Was Liverpool fans and it was such a tragic time for football. I remember watching it and couldnt believe my eyes. If it was it wasnt happening in this day and age that overcrowding, insufficient security, lack of intelligence could lead to such a tragic event.
We like a lot of people in the liverpool area lost people we knew and it was a very sad time ( and stil is).
My heart goes out to those families and I hope you never see what we did, and it would still make shocking news today, and thats why a lot of supporters were angry in France last week because past events were brought home to them once again. We just hope and pray nothing like that day will ever happen again.

back in them days stadiums used to be all standing and some stadiums had metal fencing around the stands to stop pitch invasion after the game finished, on this day their was serious overcrowding and all the liverpool fans at the front were sqaushed up by the fence and 96 fans were crushed and died and a lot more seriously injured, since then all stadiums are seated and counted so as for this tragedy not to happen again, it is a big shame cos i used to love to bum rush the pitch after the game when my team won.
