I was thinking of either a Kirby or a Dyson

I love my Dyson - I empty the cannister over the dumpster - that way no dust exits into my home. I've had mine for almost two years & it still sucks the paint off the walls. You rinse the filter twice a year & remove hair, thread, etc. from the beater bar as necessary - I haven't had to do any other maintenance.

I know someone who bought a Kirby - said it was too heavy. The expense put me off. I regularly use a Dyson (I help a friend) but I think my Henry is the best.

If a Dyson is in your budget congratulations. When I was looking for a vac i focused on the HEPA rating and then the weight of the vac. The lighter the better if stairs are an issue.

I know that the bagless vacuums are popular but I am getting ready to go back to a vacuum that requites a bag. When you go to empty the bagless vacuum the dust and all the nasty little particles that came off the carpet just fly all up in the air and you can't help but breathe some of it in. And the HEPA filter that is supposed to be so great? It does hold the dirt, but you have to beat it against something to clean it (outside, of course!) and then the dust really flies. It's just nasty. I'd rather have all the dirt in a nice little bag that I can discard. But I guess that didn't really answer your question, did it? Sorry.

Dyson is the best investment we ever made. We bought ours almost two years ago & it is so great. I clean my appliances with it too. It makes my celings & fans dust free. We are a family of 10 with a dog & 2 birds & lots of allergies. Good luck with whatever you decide.

If you can afford a Dyson then go for it. I myself love my Dirt Devil. It was only $70.00 from Wal*Mart and it's bag-less with a great filter. It's up to you, but that's my choice.
