Go to the device manager and see if it is there and working.
Right-click on My Computer/properties/hardware and click on Device manager.

Open the + at DVD/CD ROM drives and see if it is there. If not, you have a cable unplugged. You can also check the drivers from there.

Have you tried reading different CD's, commercial and home made? A CD created on another computer may not be readable on yours.

If it won't read anything, but worked before, it either died or you may have malware on your PC or installed a new program that trashed the driver.

Go to the Deviice Manager under System tools in the Control Panel and choose your CD drive. Un-install the driver, then reboot. Windows should install the correct device driver.

If that fails, go shopping.

check if the cables have come out - you should have 2 cables: a red & yellow cable (power) and a flat cable (looks like a scart lead).

if they are both plugged into the CD Drive, check if the flat cable is connected to the motherboard (a big computer chip which everything plugs into).

if thats all done & it still dont work - i'd just go buy another 1 from PC World
