I would definitely prefer an HP. Dell nickel and dimes you into an overpriced product. HP also has 24/7 award-winning support.

There's little difference in hardware between HP and Dell, mostly external appearances. These days, the components are all pretty much made by the same handful of manufacturers. You'll want to focus on the components that you're able to obtain for the price, software that comes with the system, and the quality of support and service.

With Windows XP or Vista, you'll want at least 1 gigabtye of RAM memory, or better yet 2 GB. Some of the cheaper machines come with less but get the upgrade, it makes a big difference in speed.

Display size is important, I find 15 inch LCD's too small, and prefer 17 inch or higher.

Get a machine with a combination CD\DVD reader\writer. These are very cheap, and useful for backup up data, and saving and sharing digicam photos.

Software packages let you put the machine to use right away, and antivirus and antispyware software is essential. Keep in mind that there are good freeware alternatives available, if price is a big factor in choosing between system packages.

As for service and support, HP and Dell are basically neck and neck- and both are average at best. If you end up having complex software and hardware issues, you'll spend a lot of time on the phone until you get bumped up to a high level support tech. Both offer in-home service for the first year (at the discretion of the techs). Dell seems to offer additional options with extended warranties. If buying a desktop, it's generally not worth it to get an extended warranty, but if going with a notebook computer, get the longest extended warranty you can afford. Notebooks have specialized parts and are not serviceable by the average person.

I've worked for both HP and Dell.
Both of them are good. Depends what you're going for. Desktop or Laptop? Dell desktops are indeed good and i've worked on HP desktop as well...honestly i was very happy with them as well. The difference is in the way they do business. Dell parameter changes too fast and its always very competitive for technical suport team to meet that target. So atleast the technical support is going to be good. Not all, but some dell laptops are really good. E1501 (this one comes with AMD my favorite), E1505, XPS brand of laptops (costlier and higher end ones) - XPS 1710, XPS 2010. But if you are going for laptops dont go for Dell. They've been shipping express card slot since long with all their laptops. Heard recently HP is doing the same. But if its not then go for HP laptops. Because of the reason very few companies are actually producing Express Cards. Most US Customers use air card, and most infact all companies make PCMCIA card. Also the system recovery concept of Dell looked better to me than HP. Three stages of System Recovery if the Customer have been smart and created a recovery disk the very day he got the system. Bad thing that i didn't like was Dell installs a lot of crap software with their system. User can uninstall all of them not required and then create a recovery disk. The best thing that i likes was the pc restore concept of DELL.

As i comprehend abode windows XP is stepped forward by skill of Microsoft, Dell is offering this CD with their Dell pc as a license version of working device. So, I effective it is going to artwork and no damages will take place if different utility isn't embedded with this CD which help Dell like mom board motive force and so on.

i think that hp has gotten alot better, their older computers were slow, but now they are faster. and as for dell, i know that dell has crappy customer service because my fiance's family all have dell computers and they can't ever get through to anyone for customer service. i would go with an hp, that's what i'm planning on getting when i get a new computer.

Both brands are close.

Make sure it has the fastest dual core processor you can afford. You can easily upgrade RAM, video card, and sound card later and often for less than the manufacturer wants for the upgrade.

Make sure the computer has a PCI express x16 slot.
PCI Express slots are used for video cards. An x16 slot is over 15 times faster than x1 slot. Some low cost desktop models have PCI Express x1 slots.

Dell computers are good and reliable if you take care of them. Get a good anti-spy-ware, anti-virus, and firewall application and use them. Your computer will last a long time.

Use a coupon from http://www.24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html to save on that purchase.

Good luck.
