What causes sluggish power steering in only one direction?

I have an '85 Pontiac. Is it the pump or the rack and pinion steering?

it would be the rack, if it was the pump you would have no power steering at all, you probably have a blown seal on the power assist piston, which usually doesn't matter because the bottom line is you can't usually get parts of the rack and need to replace the whole thing

Sounds like your tires may be out of alignement...
