I am trying to wait it out. It has been about 3 days, maybe a little longer.

My question is really the stages of decomposing and approximating when it will be left to dry out.

I am seeing a lot of flies coming from under the house. Nice hole under the bathroom..

1. what does this mean?
2. maggots are becoming flies?
3. what?
4. what are the stages and what is left?

thanks! smell is hardly noticeable during the day with the windows open, burning incenses, spraying oust, lighting candles, putting fans in the windows, and anything else I conjure up.. Ridiculous. but at night the smell of dead sucks really really bad....

You're not the manager at the Greewich Village, NY KFC / Taco Bell, are you? I believe the NYC health department has that issue under control.

If not, then I will attempt to help. How do you know it's a dead rat? Could be anything. I'm having trouble comprehending your hitlist but it comes down to basics.

You have an infestation of something, somewhere. If you have it localized, the only way to find out for sure is to remove the interior walls. Drywall, plaster, whatever, it has to come off. Maggots are the larvae stage of flys. When the flesh and internals dry out, all that will be left are the skeletal remains. But if it's inside a wall, it will be a long time before it dries out and it will attract insects before it does.

Whatever the problem is, it will not fix itself or go away. You got a serious problem that need attention. If you do suspect rodents, I strongly urge you to protect yourself with breathing protection, rubber gloves and at the very least some kind of disposable painters suit or something.

If this is a rental property - move. Tonight.

If it's your home - you're screwed. You can't walk away from it and the arson solution while 100% effective will present a danger to your neighbors and eventually end with your incarceration. Put that our of your mind right now.

You need to replace any rotted wood you find, treat it with insecticides and other preservatives and prevent future rodent incursions. This is not a good situation.

my guess is you have something dead under the house, not in the wall. I'd take a look under the house if at all possible. Waiting it out will take at least a month for the smell to go away, depending on temperature. Flies coming out from under the house is a good indication to me of something down there that they like.

it is going to take at least a month if you can spread some lime or mothballs under the house where the smell is the strongest
