why? because the african society was composed of many distinct tribes, which have been at war with each other for centuries. They have also been under constant - several centuries - attack from Islamic invaders and slave traders. Most tribes which came into contact with europeans saw these contacts as a chance to acquire modern weapons- and use them in self defence - against muslims and other tribes.

Of course bear in mind that the "politically correct" answer is "military conflict". In the minds (so-called) of the fuzzy headed liberals the africans are supposed to have had a racial conscience and a liberal education. The real picture resembles the Rwanda/Burundi/Congo massacres.
