If you have the finances, you may want to invest in renting a hospital grade breast pump. It cost a few hundred dollars but it is worth it if you want to pump efficiently and plan to breast feed for several months. You should be able to find one on-line or ask your ob/gyn. Hope that helps.

I have used both manual and electric pumps... and of course the electric is the way to go. (preferably a double is best) However, if you are on a budget, you can go to a hand pump. It's just going to take longer. I would suggest you buy a Medela. You can buy a used one on ebay for under a $100. You can sterilize the equipment and/ or buy new replacement hoses and cups for cheap if you are not comfortable using hand me downs. (Once they've been sterilized, it's fine)

Avent is a great manufacturer, however I am not familiar with their pumps. Most lactation consultants prefer Medela. And if you are planning on doing a lot of pumping, have a good pump! You can still use the Avent bottles, pacifiers, etc.

Good luck! Shoot for a least a year. Not only is it the most amazing experience, it's the best thing for your baby!

Electronic are definetly the way to go, but I had an avent one and I am not sure it matters what brand, but at points I really couldn't pump very much at all. I would pump for twenty minutes and get only the bottom of the bottle filled, but I breastfed just fine, you should make sure you can do the pumping well before you spend alot of money on one.

I had the Avent pump, but it is really very time consuming and the best pump to use is the Mendela Electric Pump.

I first used one with my son was born, he had to stay in hospital for 3 days and I needed to pump in between feedings, the hospital offers the pump and suctions while your little one is in hospital.

It was fantastic, to get rid of the engorgement and blocked milk ducts and it worked much faster and more efficient than the AVENT pump.

So when I had my second child I hired the pump from the hospital for the first two weeks, to help increase my milk production, build up a milk supply and avoid engorgement and blocked ducts from the get-go.

I had SOOO much milk with my daughter. I nursed her till one year and still had milk when she was 6! BUT, I couldn't use a breast pump. I got just as much squeezing manually. I couldn't let down. Try looking at your baby... pumping first thing in the morning... pumping when your baby is crying. These all help you let down. With this baby I am not getting a breast pump. Your body will adjust . If you feed 3 times a day... your body will producs at those times only... but then you won't have pumped milk for when at the sitters

My wife and I learned these things from books:

Consider electric over manual, especially if you will go back to work after giving birth. You won't want to pump by hand.after work.

Dual pump is better than single pump. It will keep both breasts lactating and producing equally. You can use just one side, if necessary, but at least you'll have the choice.

Hospital-grade pumps are ideal. They may be rented so you don't have to pay the hundreds of dollars that they cost.

You'll find more information at the link below.

(As of this moment, our baby isn't born, so this is all theoretical to us. Good luck.)

listen up, i had a avent pump, actually i had 3, and wore them all out. The motors on them suck. Call your nearest wic office. They will give you one to use and it works awesome. It is like a 800 dollar pump, they let you use it to promote breastfeeding. look up wic and they will give you free formula, give baby checkups, etc. I will never waste my $$$ on a store bought pump again, they are junk!!!!!!!!!!

I would highly recommend that you ask your hospital about renting a good electric pump. I had no luck at all with regular pumps.

You want electric - manual will be very hard, especially considering how much you need to pump.
